Another Unsafe System of Work

Serious injuries at work are all too common and another employer has this week been fined after an employee lost three fingers and a thumb in an accident involving a cooling press.

The employee had his hand caught in the press as he went to remove a mould from it. The mould did not have handles, forcing the employee to reach into the danger zone between the plates of the press.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has again described the incident as “completely preventable”, going on to say that the work operation was “inherently unsafe”.

The employee in question has not yet been able to return to work.

Employers must ensure that their employees are safe whilst in work. The result of a failure to adequately train staff and risk assess work practices can often be devastating, as this case illustrates. Often, accidents can be avoided if employers take to time to consider each of the duties undertaken by employees and provide a safe way to undertake them.

Gregory Abrams Davidson Solicitors specialise in all areas of Employer’s Liability and can advise you if you have been involved in an accident at work.
