Patient Safety Compromised

Concern has recently been raised over the training of junior doctors, prompting the Secretary of State for Health, Andrew Lansley MP, to call for urgent action. According to a critical report by Medical Education England, a government quango, patients are being put at “unnecessary risk “because inexperienced junior doctors are being “thrown in at the deep end.”

The report highlighted the fact that during their first two years of working for the NHS, trainee doctors are often asked to perform “beyond their level of competence and without adequate supervision.” One trainee was reported to be responsible for the care of 100 patients at nights and at weekends.

Cleary, urgent reform is needed. The current status quo is unacceptable. Not only is patient safety compromised but junior doctors are not given the appropriate support they need during their training years.

If you or anybody you know has suffered as a result  of treatment by an inexperienced doctor or alternatively, if you would like to talk to somebody about another potential clinical negligence claim, please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected] or alternatively, please call a member of our team on 0151 733 3353 or 02082090166
