One of his clients was injured at work whilst lifting a heavy cage using an electronic hoist. As the cage reached the top of a shaft, the client was required to lean over to pull the cage in. As he did so, one of the hooks gave way under the weight of the cage and the client was pulled away from the platform, although he managed to keep his feet on it. As the cage swung out he suffered an injury to his shoulder. Although he managed to let go of the cage and regain his balance without falling, he also suffered from shock. The client thought his employer was to blame for his accident because they failed to provide suitable work equipment or a safe system of work. He instructed Ian to help him make a claim for damages. Ian was able to negotiate a settlement before the case went to trial and the client received £25,000 in damages. This amount was for pain and suffering, including psychological problems caused by the accident. It also included financial losses, including his loss of earnings and the costs of medical care. With a strong background across a range of legal specialisms, having practised as an advocate in criminal and civil courts, his involvement in social housing welfare and citizens advice bureaux strengthened the firm as legal housing experts through the ’90s. Gregory was pivotal in streamlining the processes for housing disrepair litigation. He has many celebrated cases to his name. Personal injury and risk management are areas where Gregory also has a keen interest. His close involvement with the development of product liability litigation led to the firm being on the steering committees for high-profile cases such as ASR metal on metal Hip claims.
