Retained swabs, gauzes and surgical tools left inside patients
Leaving medical equipment or other foreign material inside a patient unintentionally following surgery is considered a “Never Event” by the NHS. This means it should simply never occur. NHS Digital data showed it occurred a record of 291 times in 2021/2022. Surgical swabs were left in patients a total of 21 times during this period.
Share of freehold lease extension
With houses converted into flats on long leases, it is common for the flat owners to also have a share of the freehold. This is typically because the owner, when the property was a house, would have extracted most of the value of the property by converting into flats.
