How Do I Find Out the Name of the Implant I had Fitted?

The recent MHRA guidance (see previous article) in respect of Metal-on-Metal implants has sparked a surge of media interest. The guidance is in respect of large head implants (36mm or more) and therefore, it does not apply to those patients who have had a ceramic, plastic or small metal head implant fitted.

We are aware that many patients who contact us do not know the name of the Metal-on-Metal implant they had fitted.

If you do not know the name of the implant you had fitted, we suggest that you contact your hospital and speak to either your Consultant’s secretary or the Access to Records Department. Each hospital has their own protocol for dealing with such requests but whatever the method, you are entitled to know the name of the implant you had fitted. Alternatively, you can make a request for a copy of any data held on your hip (if available) through the National Joint Register. The form can be downloaded from:
