HOSPITAL DEATHS TO BE MONITORED

The BBC have reported that from April 2011, all deaths in hospital, and additionally, deaths within a month of discharge from hospital, are to be monitored under a new system.

 The scheme has been brought in following the Stafford Hospital scandal.

 A Healthcare Commission report in 2009 found that about 400 more people died at Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust between 2005 and 2008 than would be expected. 

 More than £1,000,000 in compensation was paid to 98 families of patients who suffered poor treatment following poor nursing and dignity issues.

 The new system will mean that monthly data from Trusts will be published and rises or a consistently high rate will have to be investigated. 

 This should hopefully act as an early warning system so that if something in a particular Trust is going wrong, it will show up in the data and the necessary investigations can be commenced.
