HSE Targets North West

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) begin a two-week tour of colleges and construction sites in the North West today, visiting Liverpool on Thursday, with the specific aim of preventing workplace falls.

The latest figures show that in 2009/10 in this region alone, six workers were killed and 545 workers suffered major injuries as a result of falls at work.

The HSE will be travelling with specialists from the construction industry, spending a day at each location to meet as many construction workers, apprentices and students as possible.

The tour has been organised by the Working Well Together initiative which is a partnership between HSE and the construction industry. You can read more about it at www.wwt.uk.com.

We know that the consequences of falls at work can often be devastating.

Although there are health and safety laws in place to protect workers, legislation and regulations alone can not prevent such accidents. Any effort to reduce the numbers of falls through education and practical assistance is welcomed and to be encouraged.
