Manufacturing Accident

A manufacturing company has been fined £5,000 following an accident in which an employee suffered a crushed arm.

The employee was working on a packaging machine when he attempted to free a box which had been ejected. As he approached the machine with a broom it began to malfunction. As the employee reached to press to the stop button his arm was dragged into the machine.

A Health & Safety Executive (HSE) investigation showed that the employers had failed to put adequate measures in place to prevent employees accessing dangerous parts of machinery. They pleaded guilty to breaching regulation 11(1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.

Regulation 11 states that;   “Every employer shall ensure that measures are taken in accordance with paragraph (2) which are effective- (a)to prevent access to any dangerous part of machinery or to any rotating stock-bar; or (b)to stop the movement of any dangerous part of machinery or rotating stock-bar before any part of a person enters a danger zone.”
