Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2011

We often report failings in health and safety and their devastating consequences on this blog, but we are pleased to report when employers and campaigners are rewarded for their efforts in reducing and preventing accidents.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) presented it’s Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2011 in Birmingham on 18th May 2011.

Amongst the winners were The British Constructional Steelwork Association Ltd (BCSA) who became the first winner of the SME Assistance Trophy – a new award in recognition of its outstanding contribution in helping small and medium-sized firms with accident and ill health prevention.

Two occupational safety professionals also had their work recgonised by RoSPA at the awards ceremony for contributing to saving lives and reducing work-related ill health and injuries.

Professor Colin Mackay of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Steve Sumner OBE, Director of Steve Sumner Associates Ltd each received Distinguished Service Awards.

RoSPA report that the awards are on course to match last year’s record-breaking total of more than 1,750 winners from the UK and overseas in the awards’ 55th year and the cahrity’s 94th.

The majority of the awards are non-competitive and reward good accident records as well as health and safety management systems.
