Testing announced for group-B Strep (GBS)

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is one of many bacteria that can be present in our bodies. It doesn’t usually result in damage. It is relatively common with 1 in 5 pregnant women carrying GBS in their vagina or digestive systems.

GBS in some cases can cause complications as around the time of labour and birth, many babies come into contact with GBS. The vast majority suffer no symptoms but a small group can become infected. Each year 400-500 babies are born with GBS.

The BBC has reported that a pilot is to be commenced screening for GBS at 80 hospitals. Presently only high risk patients are tested. It is hoped that the Pilot will answer the question as to whether it is beneficial to routinely test women in pregnancy for GBS. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-48252619
