Workplace Equipment

The conduct and tactics of police officers and authorities in dealing with mass protest has recently come under ever greater scrutiny.

Some commentators have argued that the way officers are clothed and armed giving them the appearance of “Robocop” can adversely affect behaviour.

Police spokespersons point out however that notwithstanding the duty of care owed by officers to members of the public, police authorities owe a duty of care to officers to ensure that they are safe at work.

As is the case with all employers police authorities must not expose their employees to an unsafe work system and must ensure that all work equipment including protective clothing must be suitable for the purpose for which it is provided with regard to the work conditions and the risks faced by their employees.
